Pedagogy and Teaching Methodology

Every teaching-category post recruited in Pakistan — Primary Education Teacher (PET), Lecturer, and the NTS teacher eligibility tests — carries a pedagogy component. It is the highest-scoring section for candidates who study it deliberately, because it tests a limited, well-defined body of theory rather than open-ended general knowledge.

What is Actually Tested

Teaching Methods and Classroom Practice

  • Instructional objectives — Bloom’s taxonomy and its three domains (cognitive, affective, psychomotor), and Behavioural Objectives (ABC D: Audience, Behaviour, Condition, Degree).
  • Lesson planning — Herbart’s five steps, the 5E model, and the difference between scheme of work, lesson plan and unit plan.
  • Methods — demonstration, project, discussion, heuristic/self-discovery, micro-teaching, and the learner-centred versus teacher-centred distinction.
  • Aids and technology — TLM selection, the role of audiovisual aids, and the projected versus non-projected distinction.
  • Evaluation — formative versus summative, achievement versus diagnostic versus aptitude tests, norm-referenced versus criterion-referenced marking, validity, reliability and the item analysis of MCQs.

Child Development and Psychology

  • Developmental theorists — Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development, Kohlberg’s moral stages, Erikson’s psychosocial crises, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development and scaffolding.
  • Learning theorists — Pavlov, Skinner (operant conditioning and reinforcement), Thorndike’s laws, Gestalt insight learning, Bandura’s social learning.
  • Individual differences — intelligence theories (Gardner multiple intelligences, Spearman g), giftedness, learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
  • Inclusive education and guidance — the principle of mainstreaming, and the teacher’s role in identification and referral.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Learn each theorist as a set of stage names in order — questions test sequence and the naming of stages, not broad descriptions.
  2. Keep a table contrasting formative/summative, norm/criterion and aptitude/achievement. Nearly every pedagogy paper contains at least one such pairing question.
  3. Practise writing a behavioural objective using Bloom’s measurable verbs; avoid ‘understand’ and ‘know’ which cannot be assessed.

Common Traps

Options frequently attribute one theorist’s stage to another (Erikson against Piaget), or confuse negative reinforcement with punishment. Negative reinforcement increases a behaviour by removing an aversive stimulus; punishment decreases it.
